H and I make it a point to meet at least once a year. She is four years my junior, a Math wizard and a sudoku grandmaster. We got to know each other and became friends way back when I was about to finish high school and she was just about to complete grade school. Both of us were exposed to competitions, she excelled in Math whereas I was the jill of all trades, master of none. But then because she is much more focused, she is able to create a niche in a field she loves so much. I, on the other hand, loves life in general, so much so that focusing on just one thing is out of the question.
December of last year was when we last met, after my two travels and I just want to update her on my research. She has been helpful in introducing me to her friend and fellow Math coach based in Mindanao. Although the friend and I failed to meet, at least we were able to communicate and I was able to express my interest in their school for my research.
So anyway, she is up to whatever I like, probably because she doesn't go out much. She has been to many countries for competitions up until now and I am a bit jealous because she gets to travel a lot. But then those are the kind of travels that are highly structured because of course the contests are the primary reason, the field trips are just an added bonus. I still prefer to travel the way I like, on a shoestring budget, getting to interact with locals, and really discovering things on my own. So anyway, we both agreed to dine at Dohtonbori.

Rushing to Sto. Domingo Church yesterday to meet up with a fellow volunteer-turned close friend after a quick lunch with new friends, I found myself asking why on earth I let myself be invited to attend the Cosplay Meet in Intramuros. Oh well, that in itself is justification enough. It's highly unusual to have such an event take place within the historic walled city and it's enough to pique my curiosity.
But then it's raining. Somewhere in the north and in parts of Southern Luzon, typhoon Lando must be unleashing terror, bringing rains to Metro Manila in the process. And on a weekend. Could have been a perfect time to stay at home and read since JM just lent me a copy of the coffee table book Pasig: River of Life and also a dear professor lent me a book authored by Noam Chomsky, that intellectual giant who's famous for his anti-US policies.

But oh well, I already said yes to R. And I also would like to see the potential of Intramuros to hold such an event. We all know the place to be historic and maybe, just maybe, the event will be an added boost to make it more attractive to the younger generation. And it's been a loooong time since my last cosplay event and that last time, I exited in less than an hour after entering.
It was raining when we got there. R and I were targeting to leave at around 6PM but the event dragged on until 10PM. I should have known. I badly wanted to go home to read books and I'm worried about getting the coffee table book in bad condition in case it gets wet.

And there wasn't much food choices around. People get free yakisoba and Mr. Chips and that's it. We had to go to nearby Cioccolata Churros Café at Bayleaf Hotel for some coffee. Not that I am a coffee drinker but I needed the extra energy boost to last me until 10PM. While there we discussed about the usual stuffs--- volunteer projects, government projects, financial problems (yes, this is a recurring issue LOL), and also academic work. I often tell him how frustrated I am that I can't seem to get a decent scholarship that will take care of my expenses so I can focus on my acads and social work/ volunteer work.

Around 7PM we went back to Baluarte de Dilao. There were band performances and they were really good. I did a recording of some of them. I especially love Zenshin Aru Nomi. Yes they cuss and curse while onstage but in a funny way because there's a problem with the sound system. Nevertheless, they were a joy to watch as they rocked the night with songs from Beck.

Natsuyasumi rocked the night with a favorite song from Hunter X Hunter: Ohayou. Now something that someone from my generation can relate to. LOL Deep inside I was wishing so hard for some band to play Do You Feel Like I Feel, also from HXH.
Observations:
1. The organizers were not able to fully take advantage of Baluarte de Dilao. It was a very good place for open concerts and they should have jumped on that to hold singing contests and/or battle of the bands.
2. Weather forecasts have been very accurate in saying that it will rain almost the whole day. Tents were set up not for the attendees but for the sound system and various booths. Not all attendees are okay with getting wet... and sick later on. And the chairs were all wet so we were all reluctant to sit on them. [In short, organizers failed to consider what attendees need to have an enjoyable time.]
3. Only junk food is served inside. Free Mr. Chips, yet no free drinks. [Maybe I''m a little bit too demanding but normally free drinks are in tandem with free food, right?]
4. The event didn't seem to be marketed enough as I only heard about it a few days ago. There were very few people, and methinks the event is a flop because of the meager attendance. I should be happy with that because it made moving around so much easier but then there were also very few cosplayers. Take note, as Asia Cosplay Meet 2015, this is supposedly a big event.
5. Setting the time fro 2PM to 10PM is not a good idea. We arrived at 3PM and stayed until the end but there was not much going on because of the rain. Methinks four hours would have been sufficient. And I could have gone off around Intramuros and visit my favorite places there.
6. The sound system sucked. It's sad to see such talented bands and singers having had to endure performing with such bad sound system. This got fixed only in the end.

7. One cosplayer stormed out in rage, claiming that the whole cosplay thing is a big joke. I don't know if there is truth to what he says about the winner being close with the organizers but then again, such attitude should not be tolerated in a public event as it definitely puts people in an awkward situation and ruins the night. [It's my first time to witness something like that and I was shocked beyond words.]
8. Questioning the criteria and asking for an explanation on the judging process, which one cosplayer did, is I think the more sensible move. (In relation to #7.)
The idiomatic expression "bolt from the blue" means something that unexpectedly happens which causes much impact in one's life. It is also the English title of a Japanese comedy drama movie which tells the story of a man who is experiencing an existential crisis for working as a magician when what he wants is to be a musician. He blames his father for his misfortunes, seeing his father as a coldhearted, irresponsible person. One day, during a flash of lightning after learning of his father's death, he wakes up in a different time period. He has gone back to the time when his parents were still young and bears witness to the events that lead to his birth.
I had great fun watching this. The first part of the movie was funny and well, a favorite singer-actress plays the role of the younger version of Haruo's mother---- Shibasaki Kou. Haruo meets both the younger version of his parents and attempts to help them out. While doing so he learns that his father's seemingly cold behavior towards him was meant to protect him.
You see, Haruo's mother died when she gave birth to him. Instead of telling this to the young Haruo, he was brought up believing that his good for nothing father was so bad that her mother left him. This was meant to protect him from self-blame. Needless to say I cried a river of tears at the end of the film. It was so touching, a wonderfully made film, to say the least.

It's been a long time since I last watched a movie at home.
So after going through a very stressful first half of the year, I badly need some time to relax and clear my mind off things. Just wanna get away from it all for a little while. My sleeping patterns have changed and I have been sleeping little since the beginning of the year. I have also been going home late at night due to meetings and other extracurricular activities, much to my parents' constant worry.
I chose Tekken: Blood Vengeance because I also miss playing video games. Just recently when I attended an org meeting, the coordinator chatted endlessly on our personal interests and we have a LOT in common. We LOVE Diablo, Final Fantasy, Nightwish, Jay Chou, animé, etc. Talking to him made me realize how I have been giving up much of my time for others instead of engaging in my hobbies. Don't get me wrong, I love doing volunteer work but there are aspects of it that I don't like, like preparing the expense report. It's a hassle! >,< (But we need it to get reimbursed...)

The movie begins with a fight between sisters Anna and Nina which ended without any conclusion. The two sisters both hire one young girl each to spy on Kamiya Shin, the only one of the many students kidnapped earlier for a biological experiment. Xiaoyu was selected to spy for Nina and she meets Alisa, an intelligently programmed robot in the form of a cute pop idol-looking girl.

Xiaoyu investigates the kidnapping case that happened in her school a few years back. The students were allegedly experimented on and Shin, named 78M of the Mutare Experiment was the only survivor. Her close friend Kazama Jin was also taken for the same experiment.
It is interesting to note that Alisa shows signs of being human especially in the scene wherein she and Xiaoyu were in Mr. Lee's mansion and Alisa blushing, tells Xiaoyu that if their will is strong enough, they can top the Mishima family war, and that if her feelings are honest and true, then she will be able to rescue Shin. Xiaoyu counters by questioning Alisa's feelings, if they were real or just programmed, to which Alisa replied that true love makes someone human.
Also Alisa shows signs of being more human when she questions the morality of family members fighting each other. She wonders about the possibility of her creator being the same as the warfreak Mishima clan which engages in human genetics experiments.
Sisters Anna and Nina meet again. Disappointingly they didn't engage in a fight this time.
Alisa and Xiaoyu learns from Shin himself that he's got the world's first immortal cell which renders his body invulnerable to death. This was the reason why the two factions fight each other, to get hold of Shin's power. Shin lures everyone to Kyoto Castle for a final showdown among three generations but is killed by Heihachi. (Just what the heck were the others doing, not even trying to prevent Heihachi from killing Shin...)
Angered, Jin releases his Devil Gene and engages in a fight against Kazuya and Heihachi. Heihachi seems to be having the upper hand at first until the last minute when Jin's continuous punches send him down Kyoto Castle. Then it's just between Jin and Kazuya in devil form.

Although the movie doesn't say it, Alisa's creator seems to be Jin because Jin's voice commands are followed by Alisa without question. This happens when Alisa tries to protect him from the attacking Kazuya. Kazuya steps on her and destroys her, much to Xiaoyu's grief. Jin awakens his devil form to put an end to the cursed Mishima bloodline.

With Kazuya defeated, Heihachi springs back to ruin Jin and Xiaoyu's moment. (O.O) [I can't believe that with the extra cool graphics, this movie does not invest in good storytelling!] Heihachi reveals the true form of the Kyoto Castle, that of a gigantic monster reminiscent of Diablo in Diablo 2. [So now with his winged form, Jin looks like an archangel fighting a huge Diablo.]
So while Heihachi thinks he controls Mokujin, he is wrong. The Mokujin ignores his appetite for destruction, having seen the strong bond among Panda, Xiaoyu, and Alisa as they try to protect each other.

And who would have thought that a teardrop from Xiaoyu will be enough to revive a robot [feels like watching a Disney movie] who will then give her last punch to Heihachi-cum-Mokujin to save the day. Jin says farewell, saying he will wait for Xiaoyu to defeat him.
As for the ending, Xiaoyu shares her dream of having an amusement park with Alisa. The two agree to enter the Tekken Tournament.
A week after my birthday, my favorite food trip buddy/ sister decided to finally grant me my heart's desire to eat ramen. Since Ramen Nagi opened in SM North, I have been persuading her to treat me there. She always tells me there's nothing special about the ramen and that it's just full of MSG. I know it was, based on previous experiences but I would also like to believe that somewhere out there, my perfect ramen is just waiting for me to discover it.

We shared a bowl of akai ramen and a order of seared dumplings. The ramen was very flavorful as expected and the pork meat was tender. Still, in the end I told my sister that I love Chinese noodles better than ramen, because of the unique spices in Chinese ramen. Japanese ramen is just too vetsiny for my taste.

Because I am a fan of seared dumplings, we just had to have an order. I have never criticized any seared dumpling before and this one is equally spared. I think this is the only reason I will go back to ramen houses since Chinese restaurants usually just have steamed ones. (And I don't like fried ones that much.)
I make it a point to attend the annual Japanese film festival (Eiga Sai), a very much anticipated event especially by otakus and film buffs. I for one, am much more a fan of Japanese films than Hollywood ones because I just can't get enough of samurai films (and am also a fan of Chinese wuxia films). I also love the subtle and surreal Japanese movies, those that will really move you to tears because of the characters' display of strong will, determination challenges, and well, everything seems slow but never boring.
Last July, I only got to watch two because of my busy schedule and also because it's the start of the rainy season. I love the rain but I hate the floods and I don't want to get stranded anywhere. Anyway, one Saturday, I agreed to meet up with a friend I met in archaeology. She didn't make it to the first film though because she didn't expect traffic would be bad on her way to EDSA Shangrila Mall.
The first movie I watched is Symphony in August, a very touching autobiographical movie about Japanese singer Ai Kawashima whose early foray in the music industry was full of challenges. In her bid to get the attention of music companies, she decided to sing 1000 times in the subway. Her efforts paid off when a group of marketing people took notice of her and helped her. That part, where her newfound friends trusted in her and invested time, effort, and money in her was very touching. In today's busy world, we seldom come across people who would be willing to lend us a helping hand.
The most touching part was towards the end however, when Ai finally had her concert and she let the people knew of her story. Her mother just passed away. But aside from that, it was also revealed in the end that her biological parents died when she was young. Despite going through a lot of life's sorrows and difficulties, she still persevered, which really made me cry nonstop, so much so that my eyes were puffy when I came out of the theater.
The second film is a light drama about a young woman who married a wolf man and gave birth to wolf children. When her husband suddenly died, Hana took the responsibility of rearing their children, moving out to the countryside so that her children can choose whether to grow up as humans or as wolves.
We see the transformation of Hana's children through time. In their younger days, Yuki the elder sister was very aggressive and courageous whereas Ame the younger brother was always afraid of the littlest things. When they grew up, the roles reversed and Yuki eventually chose to be human while Ame went off choosing the path of a wolf.
If you have watched the 2000 film Battle Royale, then you should probably watch its sequel which promises even more brutality and violence, but with disappointingly less suspense.
Battle Royale 2 takes place after the first film. Nanahara Shuya, one of the two survivors of the previous game, is now the leader of a terrorist group named "Wild Seven", said to be the one responsible for the many bombings in Japan in his fight against the corrupt adults. This time the rules of the game have changed. Instead of having the students kill each other with only one lone survivor in the end, the goal now is to kill Nanahara Shuya to end the game.
Delinquent students, including Kitano Shiori, daughter of Kitano Takeshi the teacher in BR 1, woke up inside the bus on a field trip with collars around their necks. The same fear is prevalent as in BR 1 when the students were suddenly thrust into a situation where they have to fight for their own life. That is, until they were informed of the new rule.
The students are forced to wear military uniforms and were later sent to the Wild Seven island base via boats. A lot of students died and only a handful survived and came to face Nanahara Shuya. It was then that they suddenly faced a dilemma on whether to trust this terrorist leader who was responsible for the bombings that killed most of the students' parents. In the end though the remaining students switched to Shuya's side and as the military storms the island, the Wild Seven and the students join hands to fight the military.
Maybe I'm missing out a lot. I don't think I understand very well what's going on in the film or what happened in between BR 1 and 2. There are just too many unanswered questions (and I hope I can find the answers in the manga... Anyone read the whole manga, please let me know.)
I mean, in just a span of three years, Nanahara Shuya and Nakagawa Noriko, both high on the wanted list merely for breaking the rule in the previous game, were still alive and apparently have gone somewhere in the Middle East to train under known terrorist groups??? And I also wonder what keeps the military from bombing the island where the Wild Seven stay. They already know that the Wild Seven adopted the island as its main base and yet they had to send a group of innocent teenagers to go out there and confront the terrorists when USA simply had to press a button to release a nuclear missile and finish off Wild Seven without all this drama??? (Well, if that happens then we don't get to see this film...) And here's the thing that bewildered me: all girl students except Shiori were led to a tunnel by the other Wild Seven members which apparently leads to the mainland since how then will they be able to end up in the Middle East in the end? Also, they have to cross many borders and it's such a wonder how they are able to do so and with a vehicle no less. I don't know if maybe I'm just thinking too much but there are many things that are not explained so I'm hoping to see BR 3 soon (if ever they will create a third movie) and I am EXPECTING it to provide the answers to my questions.
Nevertheless, the film is a bold attempt to raise awareness on the evils of USA, how it can wield its power and bomb any nation on earth that defies their wishes. I don't know where Shuya's war against adults fit in the anti-US stance but anyway... I really hope they make another kickass BR 3. And I hope to see more girls in action. Those who are really kickass like Shiori and Saki Sakurai unfortunately died. That's just too sad. Tsk.

24.. Eagles- Desperado This song struck a nerve the first time I listened to it. It tells one to open his/ her heart and to break down the barriers that keep him/ her from experiencing love. It is against the idea that being single is ultimate freedom, that being single is probably the loneliest thing in the world. (Ouch!) Listen to Fujita Emi's version as well, which I like better. (Maybe I should create my own version entitled "Desperada"...)

This 2014, I want to make Valentine's Day extra special by celebrating my 25 years of romantic solitude. I initially planned to pen poems but due to my frequent travels the month prior, I found myself having started nothing. 4. X-Japan- Endless Rain
This superb ballad about a broken heart with lyrics so depressing that one can definitely say that there is beauty in sadness. Watch the band perform live (below) before their breakup. It's one of the most passionate performances I have ever seen.
Again from X-Japan is another brilliant ballad about disillusionment from ideal love, a desperate plea after a separation. Also figuring in the song is madness and bitterness at being left behind.
